Humble Beginnings - A child’s dream
It all started when Billo Scriven as a child started taking interest in becoming a mechanic. He studied Engineering at Footscray Institute of Technology and became a Refrigerator Me-chanic during the war. However, war broke out and Billo found himself riding motorbikes as a dispatch rider, deliv-ering orders and messages from H.Q. to various camps. This is when he fell in love with not just riding motorbikes, but also fixing them. With the war over, it was time to return home to Victoria.
A young entrepreneur’s passion
Back home, Billo Scriven started his own business of fixing refrigerators. He worked with his mother, who did bookkeeping and drove the school bus to and from Mystic Park. Driven by his love of motorbikes, he also started selling, fixing and servicing bikes. It was al-so around this time that he and Shirlee got married and the building of the service sta-tion/workshop began out on the Murray Valley Highway. Initially he worked with Nortons, AGS and Triumps. Then in 1963, he got a tip from a cus-tomer (a farmer) to consider Honda motorbikes. And so began the long and trusty associa-tion between Honda and Scriven's Consolidated Industries. Thanks to their reliability and toughness, Honda’s range expanded, and the business did as well, moving into stationery engines, generators and garden care products.
